De briefing
De trappenhuizen van twee jaren ’50 flats van woningcorporatie Vestia vormen samen een poort naar de Haagse Leyweg. Als onderdeel van een renovatie door Inbo Architecten was de verlichting aan vervanging toe.
De opgave: Inbo vroeg of de trappen sculpturaal uitgelicht konden worden.
De uitdaging
Verlichting van de onderzijde van de trapdelen gaf de trap als vorm het beste weer. Ter voorkoming vandalisme zijn de spots bovenaan de trapdelen geplaatst, zodat deze buiten handbereik kwamen. Dit betekende echter dat ze in de looprichting schijnen met kans op verblinding van trapgebruikers. Dit is voorkomen door spots te kiezen met een elliptische, waaiervormige bundel die de trapdelen wel breed aanlichten maar nauwelijks naar beneden schijnen.
Het eindresultaat
Door gelaagdheid aan te brengen in de verlichting zijn de jaren ’50 flats ook ’s avonds in balans. De trappen zelf vormen de blikvangers, de trapdelen lijken los van de muur te komen. In het gehele project is gewerkt met indirect licht.

“Samen met Spot On hebben wij de prominent gelegen trappenhuizen van twee woongebouwen aangepakt. De uitstraling die we aantroffen deed geen recht aan de locatie. Met het lichtplan van Paulo vormen de aangelichte trappen ’s avonds een krachtig en aantrekkelijk beeld, en bovendien is de sfeer in de trappenhuizen prettig geworden. De samenwerking met Paulo was prettig en direct. Hij heeft kennis van zaken en een goed ontwikkeld gevoel voor wat licht kan doen. Tegelijk is hij pragmatisch, hands-on en communicatief.”

The briefing
The stairwells of two 1950s flats owned by housing corporation Vestia form a gateway to The Hague’s Leyweg. As part of a renovation by Inbo Architects, the lighting was in need of replacement.
The assignement: Inbo inquired if the stairs could be highlighted in a sculptural way.
The challenge
Lighting the underside of the stair sections best depicted the stairs as a shape. To prevent vandalism, the spotlights were placed at the top of the stair sections so that they were out of reach. However, this meant that they shone in the walking direction with the risk of blinding stair users. This was avoided by choosing spotlights with an elliptical, fan-shaped beam that illuminate the stair sections broadly but hardly shine downwards.
The result
By layering the lighting, the 1950s flats are balanced at night. The stairs themselves are the eye-catchers; the stair sections seem to be detached from the wall. The entire project is indirectly lit.

With Paulo’s lighting design, the illuminated stairs create a powerful and attractive image at night, while also making the stairwells more pleasant to be in.
